Mopar Ammeter Bypass

Until about 1975 Mopar used Ammeters in their cars that ran through the bulkhead and at some point, left you stranded on the side of the road. If you were lucky enough not to experience this failure then get ready, it's going to happen. this is the Achillies heel of all Mopar's for this time period. good news is there's a simple bypass that can have your car running and holding power in less than 30 minutes.

All you need is about 6 feet of 10-gauge wire, a couple terminals and a pair of wire strippers/crimpers.

fist thing, lets disconnect that battery, I'm sure it can be done with the battery connected, but I can be a bit clumsy and really don't feel like accidentally arcing something under the hood.

Now, at the nut on the Alternator loosen and attach one end of your wire. This is normally a 7/16 nut.

Run the wire with the rest of the harness over to the Starter relay, usually located on the firewall on the driver's side. The wire is exposed here {red} for instructional purposes.

Connect the other end of the wire to the battery stud on the starter relay. A fusible link can be used here but it isn't necessary. clean up the wiring, reconnect the battery and that's it. you're done.

This simple fix will save you a huge headache. If you run an aftermarket Voltmeter and notice swings when using your headlights, braking, idling, this is a sign your Ammeter coming through the bulkhead is failing. it's only a matter of time before it leaves you stranded. this fix has been around for many years and unfortunately many are not aware of it until it's too late.
